Engineering

Chemical R&D Engineer

Montreal, Quebec
Work Type: Full Time

About RheEnergise

RheEnergise is a cleantech startup developing low-cost, massively scalable, long-duration energy storage. Utilising a proprietary high-density fluid in a closed loop system, we believe that HD Hydro® will be instrumental in enabling the global energy transition, and a net-zero future.

There is no time to waste in bringing climatech solutions to market. To support our ambitious development strategy, we are dramatically growing the R&D team at our Montréal technology centre. Join the team that propels the different engineering sub-system development projects and is developing our core technology.

About the Role
You will be joining the R&D High-Density Fluid Engineering team creating the first-ever HD Hydro® systems, including fluid design, production processes and maintenance systems, working towards implementing the solutions for our various full-scale demonstration projects. Along the way you will be expected to contribute to all stages, from executing bench scale testing, building out the lab, piloting facilities, full scale production and company processes. You will be comfortable sourcing components, solutions and services as part of the overall development process. Problem-solving, test and evaluation, iteration, improvement and innovation are your bread and butter. As an R&D engineer working on real hardware, you relish being able to get your hands dirty and work across multiple disciplines, be it in the lab or on-site.

This full-time position is based at RheEnergise’s HD Hydro Technology Centre in Montréal and reports to the CTO. Working is in-office or remote (as circumstances permit) and occasionally on-site when demonstrators or pilot projects are being built.

About you
We are looking for someone with the following key attributes:
  • Imaginative, creative problem-solver with a “get it done” attitude, attention to detail and pride in work
  • You are passionate about climate change and finding solutions to change the world
  • You have experience working in startups and thrive in the chaotic — but creative — environment, valuing the autonomy and accountability that a small business provides
  • Self-motivated, independent when need be, but also with potential to be a team builder as the company grows
  • Minimum of Undergraduate Degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
  • Experience working in the hydro or renewables industry is an asset
  • Alternatively, experience working with Oil & Gas drilling fluids is an asset

Your Skills
  • Engineer or Scientist with relevant experience bridging formulation design and process scaling. You have a firm grasp of chemical process design, pilot testing and mass and energy balance
  • Comfortable and curious about working across disciplines: formulation chemistry, fluid mechanics, mechanical systems, test & instrumentation, control systems, process optimization, material handling
  • Strong background in experimental work and testing. Analytical skills bolstered by strong familiarity with e.g. Matlab, LabVIEW
  • A knack for systems design with the ability to see both the big picture and the small details
  • Excellent transferable skills make you a versatile early employee
